Background

Professor Zhang, currently the Director of General Medical Department, Director of the Department of Health Care for Cadre, the Director of the Geriatrics Teaching and Research Section and the Director of the Geriatrics Research Institute at Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science & Technology (TMCHUST). He is Chairman-designate of the Chinese Medical Association Geriatrics Branch, Vice Chairman of the Geriatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Chairman of the Geriatrics Branch of the Hubei Medical Association.

Professor Zhang is an expert in geriatric medicine, geriatric cardiovascular disease, chief physician, doctoral supervisor. Engaged in cardiovascular (CVD) clinical work and research for 30+ years, he has rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of CVD such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmia in the elderly. Significant achievements are made in research fields of Geriatrics such as multiple organ dysfunction, vascular aging and immune aging. Under the leadership of Professor Zhang, the first elderly ICU ward was built in Central and South China. He is the first to carry out clinical and basic research on vascular aging in China, and establishes the first domestic “vascular aging salon”. As the founder, he launches the country's first multi-medium cardiovascular aging research, and takes the lead in formulating and publishing the first domestic vascular aging consensus in 2018 Chinese Expert Consensus on Clinical Evaluation and Intervention of Vascular Aging. The “Central China Congress on Geriatric Diseases” was founded by him in 2013. It has been held for seven sessions and has become a brand-name event for academic exchanges among the elderly in China.

Professor Zhang is currently the Chairman-designate of the Chinese Medical Association Geriatrics Branch, Vice Chairman of the Geriatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Chairman of the Geriatrics Branch of the Hubei Medical Association. He is also members of various professions societies and committees such as Electrophysiology Group of the Chinese Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology, Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Specialty Committee of the Chinese Society of Gerontology, Geriatrics Committee of the Chinese Society of Gerontology. He also serves editor for many professional journals, including Chinese Journal of Arrhythmia, Journal of Clinical Cardiovascular Disease, Journal of internal Medicine. In February 2020, he was selected as a member of the National Health Science Expert Database.

As a nation home to 300 million elderly individuals, China presents a demographic reality that underscores the critical mission of Geriatrics in our time. The central challenge lies in how to deeply integrate cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, big data, digital health, precision medicine, and cell biotechnology, and apply them across areas such as chronic disease management and the prevention and control of age-related illnesses, thereby modernizing geriatric medicine.
