Background

Professor Geoffrey H. Blowers, formerly Associate Dean and Chairman of the Board of Social Sciences and Professor of Psychology at The University of Hong Kong, was most recently the Director of the Research Office at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UOW College (HK). He is co-editor with Alison Turtle of Psychology Moving East: the status of Western Psychology in Asia and Oceania (Westview, 1987), co-author with Kieron O’Connor of Personal Construct Psychology in the Clinical Context (Ottawa/Montreal U.P, 1996) and has published papers on the history of psychology and psychoanalysis in China and Japan. He was twice President of the Hong Kong Psychological Society and was its Registrar (2000-2015). He is also Founding President of the Hong Kong institute of Analytical Psychology.
Prof. Blowers devoted himself to research and teaching at the University of Hong Kong for more than 40 years. Having trained as a biological scientist with a sub-specialty in the history and philosophy of science, Prof. Blowers began his professional career doing research in clinical psychiatry for the Medical Research Council. He came to Hong Kong in the early 1970s, initially as a graduate student and stayed to teach and do research. Sensitive and alert to the impact of culture upon psychological understanding, he concentrated on looking at the cultural and historical impact of psychology from the early 1980s.

Most of his work have been motivated by the broad question of how western psychology fits into Chinese intellectual life and its general applicability. His major courses have been “Theories of Personality” and “History and Issues in Psychology” to both Undergraduate and Graduate students, which he has taught for many years. He has also run a seminar in “Theories of the Unconscious”, also to both categories of students. He had run classes in “Current Issues in Psychology” as a foundation Course for Postgraduate students. He has published more than 200 academic monographs and academic papers (mostly as independent author). Many of these papers have filled in the gaps in the field of history of psychoanalysis, in particular in Asia.

The early 20th century saw China embrace democracy and science through the influx of Russellian philosophy, Freudian psychoanalysis, and Marxist theory. Amidst the rapid progress of medical science, it remains imperative that we prioritize patients’ psychological, emotional, and behavioral well-being.
