After 20 years of operation, the number of clinical research projects sponsored by the industry has reached 1,200. Under his leadership, the Clinical Trial Center of the University of Hong Kong has become one of the largest clinical trial centers in the Asia-Pacific region. CTC has developed into a leading clinical trial center in Asia.
In 2003, Professor Johan Karilberg assisted in the establishment of The University of Hong Kong / Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster Institutional Review Board (HKU/HA HKW IRB), which is now one of the six clusters of human testing committees (Cluster IRB) in Hong Kong. Professor Johan Karlberg published the book “Reviewing Clinical Trials: A Guide for the Ethics Committee” in 2010, which has been translated into four languages including simplified Chinese. Facing the globalization of clinical trials, the Asia-Pacific region has become a trend of emerging regions for multinational pharmaceutical companies to perform clinical trials. Professor Johan Karlberg has published the Clinical Trial Magnifier journal in 2008 to report on the development trend of clinical trials in the Asia-Pacific region. This journal has become a major index journal for pharmaceutical companies.
After retiring from CTC, Professor Karlberg recognized Hong Kong as a global clinical trial center, and worked with private doctors in Hong Kong to establish the first private clinical research and served as the director. In just two years, the center signed contracts with four main pharmaceutical companies, established cooperative relationships, and carried out phaseⅡ and phaseⅢ clinical trials. As an internationally renowned clinical research expert, Professor Karlberg continues to make contributions to clinical trials in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
